In 1978, I began my 4 years apprenticeship as a Traditional Signwriter in Coffs Harbour.
Back then, there were no computers, vinyl cutting plotters, digital printers or adhesive vinyls. The tools for a traditional Signwriter were brushes, paints, a mahl stick, chalk and a ladder. The skills to achieve and execute a perfect letter style, drawn by hand, took years to perfect. But those skills, learnt during my apprenticeship, are still valuable for making signs today. They are vital in producing a balanced, professional and quality sign, even if the tools to make them have changed. With the ever-evolving sign industry, Signwise has always up-to-date with the latest signage equipment and technology. But with these developments in the sign industry, the term “Signwriter” is loosely used and today most companies would be better-described as “Signmakers”.

In 1996, armed with a vast knowledge and a wealth of experience, Jacqui and I opened Signwise Signs. We are proud that Signwise is a small family run business with a focus on offering personalised advice and service to our customers. The most important values for Signwise have always been to produce “Quality” signs whilst also providing service, realistic costs and building and maintaining a long-term relationship with our clients.
